Customized High Performance System for Robotic Landscaping Equipment

Project Background

When one of the fastest growing manufacturers of robotic landscaping machinery was finalizing their next generation product build, they reached out to Rugged Science for their autonomous system needs. With continued consumer demand for their products, which reduce labor costs and improve user safety, they needed to improve the reliability and performance of their compute platform for enhanced operation in various weather conditions.

Project Challenges

• The customer required equipment with a small footprint
• Being utilized for landscaping, the unit needed to be ruggedized for outdoor operation
• The computer must be capable of continuously operating in 90-110 F outdoor temps
• The Rugged Science machine needed to be able to handle physical shock and vibration
• With a high voltage power system feeding motor controllers and DC motors, the equipment provided must be able to handle EMI emitted from other devices
• Unit casing must be equipped to handle external antenna outlets
• The system must include a mounting system to allow the PC to be installed and easily-removable for maintenance and upgrades
• CANBus and Ignition power control to define operational control were a neccesity

Project Solution

• Rugged Science designed, manufactured, and delivered an ECX-1000 high-performance embedded computer, with customized dual CANbus nodes, for optimal communication and performance
• Units feature a fanless and shockproof rugged design to provide increased reliability and longevity
• Intel 9th generation Coffee Lake processor, featuring 8-core performance, provided ample vehicle computing and intelligent automation power and speed
• Per customers specifications, units pre-shipped with Linux OS, and appropriate driver support, ensuring computers were operable straight from the box
• The ECX-1000 was provided with the appropriate mounting bracket, I/O and antenna connections to deliver on the needs of our customer's application requirements
